Gayetty in 1857.  It was a pre-moistened, aloe-medicated product called "Gayetty’s Medicated Paper" and his name was printed on every sheet.  However, this first modern toilet paper was not “refined” as today’s product and contained a number of splinters embedded in the paper. Yes, sometimes it was “ouch!”

During the early days of toilet paper it was an embarrassing purchase.  Even the manufacturing companies were hesitant to put their names on the product.  It was routinely sold “under the counter.”  In 1935 the first “splinter-free” toilet paper was introduced by Northern Tissue and in 1942 the two-ply toilet paper was introduced. In 1973 the United States experienced its first toilet paper shortage.  And today toilet paper is also used as a political weapon in South America.  Prior to the elections of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, many of his industrial opponents created artificial shortages of “necessary” products such as food and toilet paper.  The goal was to suggest that Chavez’s policies were responsible for the shortages.
