Lockers are an excellent choice for customers who wish to add a bit
of color and flair to their locker environment at an economical price. These lockers are commonly used in
athletic facilities, country clubs, employee dressing room, salons, and other
locations where an artistic and professional “look” is desired. They are suitable for light to medium
usage and will retain their style for many years into the future. And these lockers are available in many
sizes and styles.
Designer Lockers can be purchased in a wide variety of
configurations and colors. The
customer’s configuration is ultimately dictated by his / her needs at the
customer’s facility. Most
manufacturers offer these lockers in single tier, double tier, triple tier, and
six tier box styles. In addition,
other styles are available and include double tier “S” style, extra wide single
tier, extra wide double tier, extra wide double tier “S”, and open access
styles. Some of the most common
colors selected for these lockers are black, gray, blue, maple, cherry, and
mahogany. The maple, cherry, and
mahogany finishes are designed to resemble wood finishes. The “open access” lockers have no doors
and are generally available in depths of eighteen and twenty four inches. Open
access lockers offer large spaces for clothing and uniforms and are usually made
of industrial grade particleboard and covered with a durable plastic
laminate.
Most Designer Lockers
are constructed from industrial grade particleboard, a durable and economical
composite material. Particleboard
is denser and more uniform than conventional wood and plywood. It is a
manufactured wood product that uses wood chips, wood shavings, saw dust, and
other wood scraps and combines them with a resin. The wood and resin is then
compressed under heat and formed into sheets of particleboard. Since particleboard is not very
attractive to the eye, it is usually covered with a wood or plastic veneer. This
is called the lamination process. Particleboard is considered environmentally
friendly because most of the wood used in the process is waste wood from other
processes.
Designer
lockers using particleboard are usually covered with panels
of plastic. This process is called
lamination and the thin sheet of plastic is glued to the particleboard to form a
tight seal. This plastic veneer has
a dual role for the underlying particleboard. First, the particleboard is protected
from moisture and second the plastic veneer is very attractive to the eye. The plastic veneer used can be any one
of a variety of colors selected by the customer.
Single tier
Designer Lockers are very popular because of the large amount of interior
space. The locker is six feet in
height and stands on a four inch base.
A common depth would be eighteen inches with a twelve or fifteen (extra
wide) inch locker door. The door
can accommodate a variety of door locks including a built-in lock, padlock, or a
four digit electronic lock. The interior compartment measures 70 1/4 inches in
height. Single tier lockers are generally available as one wide unit or three
wide units and are usually fully assembled prior to delivery. Sloping hoods and
matching laminated side panels are available as options.
