The most efficient models are those that operate with an infrared sensor.  The sensor detects a person’s hands and activates the water stream.  The sensor surrounds the entire spout, but it is restricted to the diameter of the lavatory bowl.  It can only be activated with hand motion, so vandals cannot trigger it with mirrors or foreign objects.

This makes the spout ADA compliant because a disabled individual can approach the faucet from any angle and wash his or her hands.
