Large multi compartment mailboxes are mailbox clusters that are mounted on a pedestal. This accounts for their popular nickname “pedestal mailboxes.” Cluster mail boxes are made from heavy duty aluminum rendered corrosion resistant with a powder coat finish. Each pedestal cluster contains multiple boxes for users, an outgoing mail compartment and a parcel locker. Depending on the model, individual box counts per cluster number 8, 12, 13, or 16, plus outgoing mail and parcel locker. Outgoing mail is dropped through a slit at the top of the compartment, and parcels and personal mailboxes are accessed by keys.
There are a number of establishments that prefer to install pedestal cluster mailboxes. One of the largest of these user groups are retail strip centers. Over the last two decades in America, we have witnessed a nationwide explosion of retail strip centers. Not only do we find them in major cities, but we also find them in the smallest of towns. Many of these strip centers lease space to some of America’s largest retail corporations. At the same time, many strip centers are very small in physical size. Because there is frequently very limited wall space available for large multi compartment mailboxes, most property manager invest in pedestal mailbox clusters that provide each commercial tenant with their own private mailbox and accommodates packaged delivery with large parcel boxes built into the unit.
Another large user group of pedestal mailboxes is the residential housing industry. Along with the nationwide rise in strip center construction, we have also witnessed a boom in housing construction in rural areas. Unlike city neighborhoods and typical small town neighborhoods, these housing developments are self-contained communities with their own grocery stores, strip centers, schools, churches, and community centers. Most of them are built along miles of circuitous roadway that would take mail carriers hours to traverse. To make mail delivery more efficient and timely, increasing numbers of these housing communities are installing large multi compartment mailboxes at the entrances of these gated communities. Mail carriers have only one stop to make to deliver mail for each resident, who in turn has only to stop off at the gate on the way home to retrieve their personal mail or any parcels they may have received.
A third user group for pedestal mailboxes is the world of small businesses located in small office complexes. Much like strip centers, these office complexes consist of small commercial spaces leased to a variety of businesses in diverse vertical markets.
Pedestal mailboxes are designed to be installed in concrete. Popular locations are in an unused section of the parking lot and sidewalk areas centrally located between the various businesses serviced by the unit. Large multi compartment mailboxes can be mounted close to the wall to avoid creating an obstruction in the sidewalk, or they can be mounted just outside the entrance to a building with interior suites. In residential neighborhood, they are commonly mounted in a semi-circular parking area that is just inside the gated entrance to the community. Some are mounted near civic centers and community areas.
