Mail delivery in planned communities can be much more timely and convenient if an outdoor mail center is build with multiple central mail box units. These mailboxes and posts can be mounted near the entrance to the community and build within a partial enclosure that will shield residents from rain and wind during times of bad weather. These mail centers can be monitored by video surveillance and/or on-duty security guards to ensure the safety as well as the convenience of residents.
CBU mailboxes and posts are more convenient for residents of planned communities. When mounted just inside the gate under an enclosure of some sort, they can provide residents with a central location for mail drop off and pickup. Residents who are leaving for work in the morning can drop off mail in the outgoing mail slot, and when they come home in the evening they can pick up mail before driving on to their homes. CBU’s can be mounted to concrete rotundas or sidewalks near the community center or guard shack. This outdoor mail center, if you want to refer to it as that, can be well-lit and kept under 24-hour video surveillance for night use as well.
Another advantage to CBU mailboxes and posts is they are far more convenient for mail carriers. Most planned communities in the United States lie along circuitous roadways that stretch for several miles. Many go through wooded areas and wind around lakes and other landscaped features. Travelling down such a route would require a mail carrier to take several hours to deliver mail to each and every home. This would mean that residents in the most exclusive sections, which are typically located toward the back of the community, would get their mail later in the afternoon. Even worse, people living near the gate along the outbound roadway would possibly get their mail last. This is inefficient and can result in late delivery. A much better system is a central mail center located near the gate where everyone can send and receive mail at his or her convenience.
CBU mailboxes and posts offer a variety of configuration options that allow planned communities to build a mail center within a partial enclosure (to protect residents from the elements) and make this a secure, accessible area for all residents. Obviously, several central box units will need to be purchased in order to accommodate all the residents in the community. Keep in mind as well that very large communities may want to set up several such mail depots that are positioned near each major grouping of homes. This still allows mail carriers plenty of time to deliver mail, provided there are not too many separate islands to service. The actual number of central box units will need to be determined on the basis of the number of homes in the community. CBUs can be configured with varying numbers of doors and corresponding parcel units to fulfill USPS regulations.
