Thermoplastic coated metal is even better than plastic when it comes to durability.  It has the strength of metal, but it also has the nonabsorbent, corrosion resistance of plastic.  Thermoplastic is a special material that is electrostatically applied to magnetically bond it to metal.  If it is deliberately cut as an act of vandalism, it can be repaired with a simple heat gun.  Thermoplastic coated outdoor tables will neither fade nor rust no matter how much direct sunlight or rain strikes their surface.
