A pit latrine toilet
is a special type of ventilated outdoor toilet that provides users with
greater sanitation and comfort than the more common, basic pit toilet
designs. This is often the only
option a facility can offer to people due to environmental limitations that can
nonetheless be overcome to some degree to meet acceptable levels of human
dignity when standard plumbing and toilet fixtures are simple not an
option.
This
is due to the fact that many outdoor areas cannot accommodate standard
restroom toilets due to limitations on plumbing design and the lack of
sewage facilities. Toilets here
must be very simple in their design.
The original pit toilets were simply pits in the ground covered by
steel or molding. For years, people
accepted this out house design as part of life in an undeveloped area where
technology is minimal and luxury non-existence.
Few of these people who are ok with the idea of a slit-trench design
of an out house toilet fixture have ever had to actually use one. If they did, they would realize that there
are certain problems with this most basic of designs that only a pit latrine
toilet can address.
The
lack of flowing water allows for waste matter buildup that in turn creates
noxious gases and odors. These
things, in turn, attract flies and other annoying insects that no one would ever
want to have anywhere near them at such a time.
A few simple modifications beyond the basic slit-trench (i.e.:
hole-in-the-ground) concept are necessary to build an outdoor toilet that offers
a basic level of dignity, comfort, and sanitation in spite of its primitive
surroundings.
The pit
latrine toilet features very basic upgrades to the traditional, basic design
that amount to a world of difference in functionality. These pit toilets are much more than
holes in the ground covered by metal, porcelain, or plastic. They feature a supporting
structure that stands approximately 17 inches above the ground. A plastic toilet seat covers the opening
just the seat on a standard toilet.
More importantly, the pit
latrine toilet also features a through floor extension that draws pit contents
and gasses away from the center of the fixture. This traps odors, flies, mosquitoes, and
germs underground at a more comfortable distance from the human
user.
These outdoor toilets are made from type 304 stainless steel and come
in either a latrine design or a handicapped design.
There are more applications for these outdoor pit toilets than the
average person might first believe.
Conceivably, they can be used in
any facility that lacks standard piping and sewer system services. Pit
latrine toilets are routinely used in campgrounds, parks, and rest areas
along the highway.
By minimizing odor, bacterial building, and the insect attraction
factor, these simple, yet highly effective outdoor toilets offer users a level
of functionality, personal comfort, and personal hygiene than preceding designs
could never accomplish.
