Anti ligature restroom fixtures are made for safety in jails, prisons, mental facilities, and psychiatric wards. They are designed to protect inmates, patients, and staff from deliberate criminal mischief. Fixtures feature designs that minimize the possibility of patients or inmates using them for tools of suicide. Fixtures also feature design elements that prevent them from being turned into weapons by inmates or angry patients.
Suicide attempts are common in correctional facilities. The most common method attempted is hanging, which is what the term “ligature” (A cord used for strangulation) actually refers to. Restroom fixtures in the past were often used as tie off points in these hanging attempts. Over the years, fixture manufacturers began to introduce two very important changes to fixture designs.
The first design change was breakaway shelves and hooks. In patient and inmate restrooms today, towel hooks and shelves are built to support only a small amount of weight. The full weight of the human body will cause the fixture to break, making it useless for patients to tie off ligatures to these points.
Anti ligature fixtures also feature contoured assemblies now. Smooth surfaces are also very slippery surfaces, so looped cords will not remain attached in one place. Shower heads and valves in jails and mental facilities are built with a sloped surface that is too smooth for a string, cord, or rope to remain attached to.
Another thing that fixture manufacturers have to consider is the possibility of weapons manufacture. Any horizontal surface can be filed down to a sharp edge and used for cutting or stabbing. To minimize this possibility, fixtures such as lavatories, shower assemblies, and toilets are made with a minimum number of separate parts. They are also made with very smooth, blunted edges rounded off on the sides.
With a higher amount of all welded surface per square inch, a minimal number of components, and blunt edges, little, if any, weapon making material can be obtained from anti ligature fixtures. Not only are they designed to discourage the creation of cutting and stabbing implements, but they are typically designed with special bolts that are almost impossible for inmates or patients to remove. This not only discourages weapons manufacture, but it also reduces incidents of deliberate vandalism.
XPB Locker Supply carries all major fixtures and accessories that are used in jail, prison, and mental care facility restroom design. Shower units are available in all welded cabinet design that features rounded edges on shower accessories, shower controls, and shower heads. Wall mounted showers for individual cells also feature Bradley Safecare designs for shower controls and shower heads.
Lavatories and toilets are designed to minimize vandalism through flooding. Water usage controls in sinks and high pressure flushing mechanisms in toilets prevent patients and inmates from clogging the device and flooding their cells or rooms.
There are also anti ligature fixtures in our inventory that can be used with ADA restroom design, such as our Bradley ligature resistant grab bars and front mounted 2 head panel shower.
