Hand Washing Sink Systems

November 29th, 2012 by

What hand washing sink system provides the best ADA compliance?

The Frequency lavatory, by far, provides disabled users with the greatest amount of accessibility.  This is because stations are built at different heights to accommodate both able bodied and disabled users.  The upper station features an ergonomic design, while the ADA and TAS compliant lower station offers a convex bowl design that allows for greater knee clearance than other barrier free lavatory systems.  The bowl is also designed to minimize spillage with its no drip edge.  Faucets are engineered with capacitance sensing technology that combines touch free operability with impact resistance.  Lavatories are made from Terreon or Terreon RE (recycled), which are vandal and chemical resistant, easy to clean, and easy to repair.  Terreon and Terreon RE are also now GREENGUARD Certified materials.

What hand washing sink system will minimize water spillage and paper waste?

The Advocate system offers the most efficient and sanitary design for factory restrooms.  It features a built-in dual sided hand dryer that eliminates the need for paper towels.  Not only can this save a facility thousands of dollars a year on paper towel costs, it also eliminates the problems of paper towel waste on the floor.  The Advocate also offers touchless hand washing with Ndite technology.  This technology uses light for a power source and eliminates the need for batteries.  Overfill protection eliminates the problems of spilled, standing water on countertop areas and floors.  The AV series is designed with ADA compliance in mind, so accessibility needs can also be met with this model.  The Advocate can be ordered in one, two, or three users stations and is made from GREENGUARD Certified Terreon or Terreon RE.

What hand washing system do you recommend for users working with hazardous materials?

When working with hazardous materials, workers should wash up to their elbows at the end of each shift.  Consequently, the best hand wash option you can provide them is a wash fountain with a classic deep bowl design.  A circular unit mounted in or near the center of a factory restroom can efficiently service up to 8 users at a time.  Semi-circular units placed along the wall can accommodate 4users at once.

What Type of Hand Wash Sink is recommended for Health Care Professionals?

November 27th, 2012 by
Share

That depends on what part of the facility the restroom is located.  Some restrooms require heavy duty hand washing, while others need to minimize spillage for hygienic purposes.  Still others need to give medical personnel extra room to work around sink areas.

ICU

Health care professionals in ICU need a hand wash sink that is designed to minimize splashing.  The best option for this task is the Bradley Terreon Deep Well lavatory.  It features a single-piece, molded design that includes integral extra height splashes.  These help better contain water during periods of heavy use.  The unit further minimizes splashing with basin ledges that are pitched toward the center of the bowl to redirect water back toward the center.  The entire bowl is also contoured to facility rapid drainage.

Medical Locker Rooms

Medical locker rooms often experience heavy traffic during shift change and require heavy duty hand wash stations to accommodate personnel who are changing into scrubs.  We recommend that health care facilities invest in wash fountains that feature a deep bowl design that allows health care professionals to wash all the way up to their elbows.  In heavy traffic environments, circular deep bowl washfountains can accommodate up to 8 users at once have proven to be better for water conservation than standard hand wash sinks.  They are also more efficient when it comes to water conservation.   Wash fountains are available in stainless steel, which has always been something of a standard for the medical industry, and new Terreon and TerreonRE, which offers a durable, impact resistant surface that is moisture resistant, sanitary, and easy to clean.

Medical Laboratories

Most laboratories in emergency clinics, outpatient centers, and hospitals cannot be adequately furnishes with standard hand wash sinks.  Health care professionals working in these laboratories require more surface area than the typical lavatory system offers.  Lav decks are preferable in these environments for two reasons.  For one thing, the deck itself offers a shelf-like surface on which various testing equipment can be set before being washed.  Secondly, lav decks can be ordered with customized lengths, making it possible for a facility to dedicate an entire wall to hand washing and equipment washing needs.

Lav decks can be ordered in natural quartz or Terreon.  Both are GREENGUARD Certified materials that are chemical resistant, easy to clean, and environmentally friendly.

What types of Sports Lockers work best for Athletic Equipment?

November 24th, 2012 by
Share

Full-length, single tiered sports lockers are the best choice for athletic equipment. This is due to the simple fact that only a locker that stands as tall or as taller than a person is large enough to contain some of the larger pieces of equipment that athletes use in various games.  Baseball bats, hockey sticks, and football pads are simply too bulky to store in more compact locker spaces.  Lockers used by league teams and professional athletes should preferably have additional storage areas located at the top of the unit and the bottom of the unit.  These storage compartments should be locked so that valuables and other personal items can be secured while the athlete is at practice or at a game.

The most popular sports lockers that fit these requirements are the open access lockers found in our inventory. Open access lockers resemble closets in the way their interior space is configured.  At the top, you have a shelf that divides the upper section of the locker into a small cubby that is ideal for storing smaller pieces of equipment, such as baseball gloves, a basketball, or an extra pair of shoes and socks.  The main vertical section stretches below this cubby area.  It normally has at least one or two hooks on which to hang uniforms.  Many models also have a curtain rod that allows uniforms and day clothes to be neatly hung so they will not become wrinkled.

In places where large vertical space is needed for storage, but where an enclosure of some kind is either necessary or desirable, organizations may want to consider single-tiered sports lockers made from solid plastic. Solid plastic is perhaps the most vandal resistant type of material currently on the market.  It is not as easy to scratch or cut as many people assume.  It never dents and it never rusts, which makes it one of the most versatile materials in terms of applications.  It is commonly used in very humid environments that could easily damage wood finish or rust metal over a period of time.  Plastic lockers feature doors that can be locked so that personal storage is secure.  Also, they are ventilated so that interior contents remain dry.

In some cases, metal single tiered lockers can be used for athletic equipment storage. Typically such environments would be rural schools, or they would be facilities that operated on a limited budget.  Metal lockers are well ventilated and offer plenty of storage space.  They can also be locked and secured like other enclosed sports lockers so that personal items remain secure during practice and game play.

XPB Lockers carries a wide variety of steel metal lockers, plastic lockers, USPS mailboxes, and commercial bathroom partitions installed nationwide. Do Wooden Benches Really Last?

November 20th, 2012 by
Share

Yes, wooden benches will last if they are properly constructed and treated. Keep in mind that wood itself is not the only material used in building these benches.  Several components are made from metal and will definitely withstand inclement weather conditions provided they are properly manufactured with durability in mind.

Many benches that we have are made with a cast aluminum frame that will not rust. This makes it ideal for indoor as well as outdoor use because it will not leave rust marks on the floor.  The frame is protected by an electrostatic powder coated finish.  The frame can also be colored white, green, black, or brown to compliment building architecture or surrounding landscape features.  Others are made with a cast iron which is also powder-coated to prevent rust out.

Wooden benches are made from wood which has been pre-finished prior to manufacture. They can be treated with either a preservative stain or a clear preservative coating that minimizes moisture penetration that can lead to wood deterioration.  Wood choices include pine, mahogany, cedar, oak, and Asian shorea wood—which is a sister wood to teak.  Keep in mind that wood that does not have to be treated if it is used inside.  However, benches used in atriums should be treated in order to protect the wood from interior humidity.

Benches can be ordered as portable or permanent mounting. Feet can be drilled for stationary mounting to sidewalk areas.  They can ordered with or without back rests.  Some feature very basic bench and back rests designs, while others have a deliberate, luxury appearance that looks sculpted, warm, and inviting.  Cedar benches are notably rustic and are ideal for historical renovation projects.

Wooden benches are popular for any type of garden area, commercial or residential. Office parks in particular like to use them in break areas that are designed to help people relax.  Backless benches are typically used for two reasons.  One, they are less expensive, and two, they encourage people to take shorter breaks because they do not invite persons to recline the way benches with backrests tend to do.  Benches with backs are more popular with restaurant and retail areas where encouraging people to stick around can lead to repeat business.

Material Application Guide for Bradley Wash fountain Designs

November 17th, 2012 by
Share

Bradley wash fountain designs are manufactured from four primary types of materials. Each of these materials offers economic and performance advantages in specific environments.  Knowing what these advantages are will better enable you to make the best choices for your procurement requirements.  Options that can help you save space as well as water are also included in our inventory.

Bradstone

This low cost, chemical resistant material is a Bradley specialty.  It is designed specifically to be cost effective for facilities on a budget that do not have to worry about vandalism.  Due to its practical, affordable durability, it is ideal for many retrofit applications.

Precast Terrazzo

Precast Terrazzo is a high-end material and a mid-range price point.  With a high level of aesthetic, it is the ideal material choice when Bradley wash fountain designs need to look as good as they work.  Its vandal resistance makes it appropriate for a variety of high-traffic environments, including sports stadiums and concert halls.  It does require special care in cleaning, however, so facilities should prepare to spend a little more time, and possibly money, on maintaining its superb appearance.

Terreon

Terreon may not have the sophisticated look of Terrazzo, but it more than makes up for its slightly less aesthetic appeal with some never before seen advantages in previous generations of commercial restroom fixture materials.  To begin with, it features a stain and burn resistance which makes it suitable for heavy duty applications in manufacturing environments.  As a solid surface material, it is easily repaired and/or refinished if damaged or scratched.  Like Terrazzo, it is a mid-range procurement option which is affordable to typically any new construction project as well as many remodeling projects.  It also ships with lower freight cost than Terrazzo because it is approximately half the weight of Terrazzo.

Stainless Steel

Bradley wash fountain designs made from stainless steel continue to represent one of the most vandal resistant substances of all times, as well as possibly the most hygienic option in fixture material types.  Stainless steel continues to be the preferred material for medical, printing, and food processing facilities.  It can be cleaned with nonferrous abrasives without losing its finish (in fact, this is one way to restore its finish).  While some chemicals may cause it to corrode, it is generally ideally suited to virtually any material handling facility that requires special exceptional durability and sanitary surface areas.

Bradley wash fountain designs can be corner-mounted triangular units, wall-mounted or wall-hung semi-circular units, or floor-mounted circular units.

Mailboxes for High Rises and Mid Rises

November 15th, 2012 by
Share

Is there any one type of mailbox that is ideal for a midrise or a high rise building?

No.  What determines the best mail center for you will be the amount of wall space you have available to build a mail center on the first floor of your building.  This wall space has to accommodate all the apartments in your building with both individual mail units and parcel units that are specified per USPS Code.

How many parcel units do we need?

Generally speaking, USPS requires 10 units to every individual mail box.  Additional codes may apply to your building in some situations.  Do not worry too much about trying to figure out the codes.  If you will provide us with the number of apartments in your building, measurements of your wall, and some general information about your location, we can help you build a mail center with the right number of individual units, data boxes, or parcel boxes.

What mailboxes you recommend for remodels?

You want to invest in either surface mounted units or rotary mail centers with rotating horizontal mail boxes contained in a cabinet.  The choice between the two normally depends on the number of individual apartments in your building.  If you have only a relative few units with very large, luxury floor plans, you may want to go with front loading, surface mounted vertical mail boxes.  If you have more tenants, then a rotary mail center may be better for you.  The advantage to a rotary center is you can place it anywhere in your lobby regardless of your existing wall space.  The units rotate as a group 180 degrees so that they can be loaded from the back by the mail carrier.

Are vertical mailboxes the best option for smaller buildings?

Best is a relative term.  Vertical mail boxes do provide more storage space and are easier for mail carriers to access.  Larger mail can fit into the slots without being bent, so tenants tend to appreciate this.  Not all buildings with vertical mail units are small, however.  Some have plenty of wall space in which to build a larger than usual mail center.  Others are, like the example above, buildings with very large luxury apartments that have fewer actual tenants to service.

Metal Benches versus Wood Benches

November 13th, 2012 by
Share

Metal benches are often the best option for both traditional and commercial landscapes. For rural parks, university campuses, and quiet settings near public buildings, bench colors and designs can be ordered that closely approximate the color and texture of wood.  For more dynamic commercial landscapes, as well as many historical restoration projects, metal designs offer superb compliments to modern architecture, landscape elements, and restored historical buildings.  Treated metal used to make these benches also features a vandal resistance that makes them the only viable procurement option in places where criminal mischief is frequent.  They are also, by nature, more weather resistant than even the best treated wood.

Public landscapes often call for outdoor furniture that compliments the mood of the setting. In corporate environments, minimalism, mathematical symmetry, and a less-is-more approach to vegetation are used to establish an objective state of mind that supports the professionalism of life within the office building.  Several types of metal benches provide ideal compliments to this type of setting.  Offered in a wide range of unique and traditional colors, they allow facility managers to not only accent the softscapes around the building, but also to compliment the building itself with outdoor furniture whose designs directly correlate to architectural motifs.  This is equally true for historical and municipal landscapes that often feature period architecture, formal architecture, or a deliberate return to classicism.  Wrought iron benches and various other bench models offer landscape architects a number of designs that compliment elegant columns, Victorian, or Edwardian building architecture.  There are also designs that embody the moods and sentiments of mid-20th Century building design and civil engineering.

Metal benches are also the more durable of the two choices in comparison to wood. Wood will eventually give way to the elements even when it is treated for weather resistance.  UV sunlight during hot summers, preceded and followed by heavy rains in the spring and fall, and ultimately followed by freezing snow and ice in winter will eventually alter the appearance of wood and diminish its integrity.  Galvanized or powder coated metal, on the other hand, can endure any of these weather extremes without corroding, cracking, or buckling.  Metal is even tougher when coated with Thermoplastic.  This UV resistant, weather resistant coating is also highly resistant to impact.  It is strong enough to withstand many deliberate attempts at vandalism.  Even if it is damaged by cutting, it is easy and cost effective to repair with a heat gun.

Why Bathroom Stalls for Total Privacy are Top Priority

November 10th, 2012 by
Share

Bathroom stalls for total privacy represent an ideal blend of function, aesthetics, and user amenity. You have to think about a blend of these three factors any time you are developing a new restroom design.  This holds equally true for both new constructions and renovations.  New build outs are expected to look new by offering a blend of the latest fixtures and accessories and an interior design that reflects a certain awareness of decorative trends.  Remodels can be even more demanding than new constructions because these projects are usually undertaken with a limited budget.  Expectations are typically just as high as they are for new constructions, yet funding for these expectations is severely limited.  Organizations have to make some very tough calls when determining bathroom design priorities.  If only one or two things can be replaced with available budgets, the things that matter the very most to a user are the things that need to be upgraded.

Without question, the total privacy of your bathroom stalls is going to rank near the top, if not at the very top, of any priority list you make. People will use practically any mirror you hang on the wall so long as it does not distort their reflection and as long as it is cleaned.  People will also use lavatories that are years behind the times so long as the sinks and faucets are kept clean.  People will also use a trash can even if it is already filled to the brim with refuse—so long as whatever they are throwing away does not fall back on them.  Few users purposefully throw paper towels and other waste on the floor, but if these things fall out of the trash after they throw them away, they typically pretend to not notice this and simply leave the room.

On the other hand, people may turn right around and leave the restroom almost as soon as they enter it if your bathroom stalls have site lines between the doors and pilasters. Some site lines are as large as ½ inch wide, allowing a person to see into the stall even when the door is shut and locked from the inside.  These site lines can be eliminated by adding door jambs to pilasters so that light cannot travel through this gap and generate visibility.  Total privacy can be achieved by replacing 55 inch panels and doors with panels and doors that measure 72 inches in height.   Toilet compartments built with larger components do require some investment on your part.  However, if you have a limited budget that can only afford to partially upgrade your restroom interior, bathroom stalls are the best places to invest those funds because total privacy here ensures total comfort for your user regardless of the aesthetics of other restroom fixtures.

Mailboxes and Posts for Gated Community Development

November 8th, 2012 by
Share

What type of mailboxes and posts do you recommend for planned communities?

We recommend Central Box Units, also known as CBU’s.  While this differs from the image that many people have of the mail box on a post in front of a house, we have found that a centrally located, secure, and well-lit sheltered outdoor mail center can work much better for residents of many gated housing developments.  This is not always the case, but there are specific instances where it proves to be the most practical way of getting people their mail on time.

Why would people in such a community not want mail delivered to their homes?

People want mail delivered on time just as much as they want it delivered to a convenient location.  It really depends on where the community is located as to whether individual home delivery or central mail delivery is more expedient.  In rural areas where a single post office can service a planned community more or less exclusively, individual home delivery can be done like it is in any American city.  However, if the gated community is near a major city like Houston, and the nearest post office is servicing multiple zip codes and neighborhoods, centrally located mailboxes and posts may be better for the residents.  Mail carriers who already have a very full schedule would have to drive through several miles of winding roadway to deliver mail.  This could take several hours and result in late delivery for persons living along the outbound stretch of road leading out of the community.

Is a central outdoor mail center safe?

Yes.  If you build the center near the guard shack where it can be watched, it is perfectly safe provided it is located within the gate.  You can also build it under a shelter of some type to keep the rain off the mail and the residents.  Most planned communities go ahead and install security cameras in these sheltered areas to make certain that the facility is safe for nighttime use.  Mailboxes and posts mount directly to concrete, so these centers can be built on existing sidewalks near a community center, or they can be constructed on mail islands in a special area just inside the community entrance.

Toilet Paper Dispenser

November 6th, 2012 by
Share

Toilet paper dispensers fulfill the fundamental purpose of a restroom.  As such, they should offer configurations that fit both the traffic requirements and the floor plan of the bathroom.

In small restroom stalls, single and double spool paper dispensers are often the most convenient way to accessorize the stall interior.  Specific designs include single spools for very small restrooms in low traffic areas, double spools for employee restrooms in places such as small offices or retail stores, or quads that mount within the partition itself.  Paper is dispensed on either side of the partition, so the accessory services two users at a time.

Jumbo or double jumbo toilet paper dispensers are for high traffic areas.  We see these used a great deal in sports arena restrooms, lounge restrooms, airport restrooms, bus station restrooms, and subway restrooms.  Jumbo units house larger rolls of paper and contain these rolls within stainless steel housings.  This prevents toilet paper theft.  There are single roll units and double roll jumbo units.  In double roll units, when one roll is exhausted, the bottom access lever can be slid to the side to allow access to the second roll.

Controlled delivery toilet tissue dispensers are designed to minimize toilet tissue waste.  Institutions that prefer this type of accessory include detention centers, schools, and senior citizen homes.    Various models utilize a special design that features a spring that puts tension on the roll.  This, in turn, controls how much paper can be taken off of the roll at a time.

In upscale restrooms, facility managers can also install designer toilet tissue  dispensers.  The Diplomat series dispensers are vertical, stainless steel mounts with the toilet paper roll toward the bottom of the unit.  The dual-curve geometry of these models makes them more aesthetic, durable, and functional in the sense that paper can be dispensed without binding.  Other Diplomat accessories by Bradley can be installed throughout the bathroom to give it a unified, consistent décor.

Toilet paper dispensers come in a variety of mounting options.  Surface mounted units make remodeling easier and more cost effective.  Semi-recessed and recessed mountings allow for a variety of new construction and renovation options.  Partition mounted units and between partition mounts also allow dispensers to be adapted to any ADA compliant stall or toilet stall layout.
