There is something uniquely Americana about post mounted mailboxes.  Some of us remember growing up in a home with a mailbox at the end of the driveway.  In the summertime, when school was out, our mothers would ask us to watch for the mailman.  For us, it was an excuse to go play in the front yard.  For them, it was a chance to keep an eye on us while they taught us responsibility.  While many have forgotten these days, you can keep them alive by installing a post mounted mailbox in your own little island of America.  XBP has all sorts of single, double, and even 4 box posts like the ones shown in the picture.  Whether you live in the country, a small town, or the big city, we have a mailbox that is right for you.

XPB Locker also has larger post mounted cluster mailboxes designed for planned communities.  These mailboxes are usually located either at the entrance to the community or somewhere near the community center.  Rather than going from house to house along a long, winding road that could stretch for miles, mail carriers can deliver all of the mail at once to a single location.  Residents returning from work can stop by the mailbox on the way to their homes.  Or, residents working in their homes can take a break, pick up their mail at the community center, and spend a few minutes catching up with neighbors before returning home.

Stores and office parks can also follow this same principle by installing commercial post mounted mailboxes outside the entrance to the building.  Many businesses prefer this because they consider daily mail delivery a needless interruption of the office.  Mail carriers in large cities also appreciate the convenience of making a single, central stop along a very busy and demanding urban route.  Often too, the property managers of these business centers will install trash cans beside the mailboxes so tenants can sort out the junk mail on the spot.

Mailboxes for High Rises and Mid Rises

Is there any one type of mailbox that is ideal for a midrise or a high rise building?

No.  What determines the best mail center for you will be the amount of wall space you have available to build a mail center on the first floor of your building.  This wall space has to accommodate all the apartments in your building with both individual mail units and parcel units that are specified per USPS Code.

How many parcel units do we need?

Generally speaking, USPS requires 10 units to every individual mail box.  Additional codes may apply to your building in some situations.  Do not worry too much about trying to figure out the codes.  If you will provide us with the number of apartments in your building, measurements of your wall, and some general information about your location, we can help you build a mail center with the right number of individual units, data boxes, or parcel boxes.

What mailboxes you recommend for remodels?

You want to invest in either surface mounted units or rotary mail centers with rotating horizontal mail boxes contained in a cabinet.  The choice between the two normally depends on the number of individual apartments in your building.  If you have only a relative few units with very large, luxury floor plans, you may want to go with front loading, surface mounted vertical mail boxes.  If you have more tenants, then a rotary mail center may be better for you.  The advantage to a rotary center is you can place it anywhere in your lobby regardless of your existing wall space.  The units rotate as a group 180 degrees so that they can be loaded from the back by the mail carrier.

Are vertical mailboxes the best option for smaller buildings?

Best is a relative term.  Vertical mail boxes do provide more storage space and are easier for mail carriers to access.  Larger mail can fit into the slots without being bent, so tenants tend to appreciate this.  Not all buildings with vertical mail units are small, however.  Some have plenty of wall space in which to build a larger than usual mail center.  Others are, like the example above, buildings with very large luxury apartments that have fewer actual tenants to service.

Why Should I Buy Horizontal Mailboxes Instead of Vertical Mailboxes?

Many organizations ask us this when they see how much mail can be loaded into a larger vertical mail box, and when they see how easy it is for mail carriers to quickly retrieve and deliver mail in a large, easily accessible vertical slot.  While these are major points of convenience for both mail carriers and users alike, horizontal mailboxes are much more practical when space is limited, or when there is a large community of people to service.

The reason for this is simple.  Vertical mailboxes are much larger, and they line up in a single row along a wall.  It takes a rather large wall to accommodate a large number of vertical units.  However, horizontal mailboxes, due to their compact size, and the fact that they can be arranged in multiple rows, consume far less horizontal wall space.

30 horizontal mailboxes can be installed along the wall between two large offices without having to sacrifice floor space that can be much better utilized for leasing, production, and profitability.

Vertical mailboxes are indeed highly attractive and provide better space accommodations for larger envelops and oversized mail.  Their best application is in places where cosmetics and convenience are necessary to attract business on the basis of amenities.  They are also very practical for very small apartments and office buildings that do not have that many mail recipients to service.

Realistically, however, horizontal mailboxes are preferred by most architects and building managers responsible for mail services to communities of any considerable size.   The existing of front loading horizontal units makes them even more space efficient for organizations that cannot afford to sacrifice floor space to a mail room behind the boxes.

There are even surface mounted configurations that allow builders responsible for remodels to install a compact mail center that does not even require cutting into the wall.

The key to this flexibility of applications lies in the innate simplicity of horizontal mail box design.  As an individual unit, the individual box is nothing more than that—a box that is slightly wider than it is tall.

However, this very basic design allows for the creation of highly compact, customized mail centers simply by arranging the necessary number of horizontal mail boxes in an appropriate number of rows and columns that make the most of a small amount of wall space.  Parcel lockers and outgoing mail boxes can be installed within these clusters that will accommodate every possible need of mail recipients in the building.
