American Mailboxes are rectangular multi-compartment mailboxes that are ideal for use in private postal centers, military bases, police stations, schools and colleges, corporate mailrooms, government agencies, and many other applications.  All models of the mailbox units have the same outside dimensions and therefore are designed to be stacked two high and mount adjacent to each other or between wall studs.

Americana Mailboxes are constructed of twenty gauge steel and have zinc die-cast doors.  Each door has a five pin cylinder cam lock with two keys.  The doors are attached with four screws which hinge the doors on zinc frames. Various models of these mailboxes units are available with 8, 14, 16, and 30 doors.  Mailbox units with 8 doors will have compartments measuring 11 inches wide and 6 inches in height.  Mailbox units with 14 doors will have 12 compartments measuring 5 1/2 inches wide and 6 inches in height plus 2 compartments measuring 11 inches wide and 6 inches in height.  Mailbox units with 16 doors will have compartments measuring 5 1/2 inches wide and 6 inches in height.  Mailbox units with 30 doors have compartments measuring 3 1/2 inches wide and 5 inches in height. The overall dimensions of the unit are 23.5 inches in width, 26.5 inches in height, and 15 inches in depth.  Most models weight approximately 85 pounds.

The Americana Mailboxes are also available in both rear loading and front loading models.  The rear loading models have open backs for easy delivery of mail and other items.  An optional hinged locking rear cover is also available.  An advantage of the rear loading units is that when used in a free standing rotary mail center they can be accessed and serviced by the United States Postal Service.  The front loading units are built with solid rear covers.  The front door panel swings open on a continuous hinge to allow access to all compartments.  The front door panel is opened via two master commercial locks.

All compartments of the Americana Mailboxes have a tan powder coated finish. A powder coated finish is far superior to conventional paint.  A powder coated finish is applied in an electrical process by giving the base metal and the dry free flowing powder opposite electrical charges.  When the powder is applied to the metal with this electrical process it forms an extremely strong adhesion or bond.  The powder can be applied at various levels of thickness and it is heated or cured to form a uniform, texture-smooth, high quality finish that is both attractive and durable.  This finish will protect the base metal from rust and corrosion for many decades.  It is also easy to clean with standard household cleaners when  graffiti or paint is applied.

Modern mail delivery and the mailbox are believed to have originated in Paris, France in 1653. By 1829 mailboxes had become much more common are were installed and used throughout France.  The concept traveled to the United States and public mail collection boxes started appearing in the 1850s.  In 1863 the United States created “Free City Delivery” which was the first home mail delivery service in this country.  The mail carrier would knock on a person’s front door and patiently wait for the resident to answer.  The mail carrier spent a good deal of his time waiting on the porch and there was always the question of what to do with the mail if the resident did not answer the door. Obviously this was a very personal service but it was also very inefficient.  Therefore, mail slots and mailboxes were created to avoid these delivery problems.  And today, more efficient and more secure systems for mail delivery, such as Americana Mailboxes, have been developed.
