Roadside Mailboxes

Our Residential Roadside Mailboxes are functional as well as stylish.  They are made from aluminum and are available with a powder coated (paint) bronze, brass, copper or nickel finish.  Power coating is a process using opposite electrical charges to apply paint to a metal surface.  The result is a very strong adhesion of the paint to the metal surface and a residential roadside mailbox with a lifespan of decades.

These designer residential roadside mailboxes feature both front and rear access locking doors, an outgoing mail tray, two keys for each door and a burgundy signal flag for outgoing mail.  These mailboxes also offer an optional newspaper holder that can add uniqueness and style to your mailbox. The mail carrier will deposit the mail through a non-locking access panel on the front.

Your Residential Roadside Mailbox has several mounting options.  One option is to bolt it directly to anchors that have been placed in the concrete surface.  A second option is to mount them on an in-ground pedestal that has been placed in subsurface concrete.  For these first two options there are a variety of pedestals to choose from to enhance the stylishness of your property.  A third option is to mount your residential roadside mailbox in a column, masonry or wall.

Our Residential Roadside Mailboxes are approved for United States Postal Service (USPS) curbside mail delivery. Often these types of mailboxes are located near the street curb.  In rural areas it is common to find curbside mailboxes grouped together near property boundaries or road intersections. The USPS has regulations that specify the distance a mailbox may be from the road surface.  However, these requirements can be modified by the local postmaster to account for local environments and road conditions.

In 1863 people in the United States began to receive delivery of their mail at their home address due to the creation of “Free City Delivery.”  At this time the mailmen would knock on the homeowner’s door and wait patiently for someone to answer.  However, it was soon realized by efficiency experts that each mailman lost 1.5 hours each day simply waiting for someone to answer the door.  And then there was the question of what to do with the mail if no one was home.  Therefore homeowners as well as businesses began to install mail slots or letterboxes (mailboxes) to receive the mail when they were unavailable.

Later it was proposed that some residential and commercial mailboxes be located near the street on suitable posts or other supports.  This solution would make mail delivery more time efficient when the front door of the mail recipient is some distance from the street.  This solution was particularly helpful in rural areas because there were a limited number of mailmen using horse-drawn wagons to deliver mail to many widely scattered rural homeowners.  Thus the curbside mailbox was born.  It was not a uniform or perfect solution in the early years.  Being frugal, many farmers and rural homeowners initially resisted the purchase of a dedicated mailbox.  They often used wooden boxes, empty bushel baskets and tins to serve as their mailbox.  Finally in 1923 the USPS mandated that every mail recipient must have a mailbox or mail slot in order to receive home delivery of mail.

In 1915, Roy J. Joroleman designed the curved, tunnel-shape top curbside mailbox with a latching door and movable signal flag.  The tunnel-shape top design helped prevent water and snow collection. The design was approved by the U.S. Postmaster General and it was made available to manufacturers for inexpensive duplication.  This design has become an American icon with millions being sold in the United States and Canada.
