Terrazzo Wash
Fountains are so named because they use a precast bowl assemble made from a
material called Terrazzo. Terrazzo has a mosaic looking surface and is comprised
of 85% stone and 15% binder. Steel
reinforcing rods are placed in the bowl during the casting process to give the
bowl additional strength. After being cast the Terrazzo is polished to a high
gloss and then sealed with a clear polyurethane resin to maintain its beauty.
Terrazzo is available in four
beautiful nature colors including dusty rose, granite, whisper gray, and white
marmorite.
Terrazzo is a
wonderful material for wash fountains. Terrazzo Wash
Fountains are medium cost fountains and Terrazzo is one of the most vandal
resistance materials used because of its heavy weight and durability. Although
Terrazzo is very attractive, it is not ADA compliant. And because the stone/binder material is
sealed with a polyurethane resin, abrasive cleaners should not be used. If the resin finish is damaged by
abrasive cleaners or caustic cleaners it will have to be repaired and
resealed.
Terrazzo
Wash
Fountains can be designed for a multitude of
hand washing applications. Deep bowl classic wash fountains are designed for
more intensive washing
of hands and arms. This design is appropriate for users who require moderate to
heavy duty hand washing. This bowl
design is not appropriate for users who desire to save water or energy. Nor is
it appropriate for meeting ADA requirements. It is most appropriate for
manufacturing facilities, repair facilities, stadiums, and other locations that
require heavy duty hand washing.
Terrazzo
Wash
Fountains frequently combine the Terrazzo bowl
with multi-fount faucets. These
multi-founts are designed for ADA compliance and water conservation. In general, they are a very attractive
option for applications requiring light to moderate duty hand washing and
ADA compliance.
Common applications would include schools, building lobbies, rest areas, sports
and athletic facilities, and light manufacturing or warehousing facilities. Multi-founts are not appropriate for
heavy duty hand washing because the water flow rate is limited.
The cleaning and
maintenance of Terrazzo
Wash Fountains should follow simple guidelines. The key is to clean the Terrazzo bowl
with standard detergents, warm water and soft cloths. Harsh cleaners with acid or alkaline
solutions, such as floor strippers or drain cleaners should not be used on or
poured down Terrazzo bowls. These harsh cleaners will damage the clear
polyurethane resin used to seal the bowl.
If these cleaners are inadvertently used on a Terrazzo bowl then the bowl
should be rinsed immediately with water and inspected for damage. A hazing appearance is an indication
that a harsh cleaner has been used on the bowl. Sometimes exposure to UV radiation will
create the same hazing appearance.
Repairing the Terrazzo bowl is relatively simple process. A paint
stripper should be used to remove the existing polyurethane resin. Any stains or minor damage to the bowl
can be removed with a light grit sandpaper. The bowl should be cleaned and dried
thoroughly before two to three new coats of clear polyurethane resin are
applied. Then allow the resin to dry.
The manufacturer does have simple repair kits available for
sale.
