Vertical Mailboxes

Vertical mailboxes can be used in specific situations. According to USPS-STD-4B+ regulations, you can use them for retrofitting and replacing existing mailboxes under a USPS grandfather clause. If you have a small building with only 10 tenants or less, you can also install them in a new construction.

Office parks, condominiums, and small buildings use them all the time.

As the word “vertical” tells us, the individual mail compartments run top down. Doors open on hinges so you can retrieve your mail. Boxes are front loading, swinging forward on a radial arc that allows the mail carrier to place the mail slots of individual compartments. Front loading saves space because you do not need to build a hallway behind the mailboxes for the mail carrier.

You can use vertical mailboxes for internal, private mail if your organization requires this. Many of our clients that use them for this purpose include colleges, schools, and Government agencies often deliver internal mail in this way. Units are fitted with master commercial locks with two keys are provided to accommodate this function.

These mailboxes consist of groupings of 3-7 individual compartments. If you need more than seven boxes, you can install more than on unit group to get the desired number of compartments.

If you are retrofitting more than 10 compartments, USPS regulations require you to have an outgoing mail slot for every 10 mailbox compartments. The outgoing mail compartment is the same size as the others, but it has a mail slot at the top for deposits. The slot is located near the top of the compartment, toward the left, and measures 4 3/8 inches.

You can either surface mount or recess mount your vertical mailboxes. If you surface mount them, they will extend slightly from the wall. This will work just fine, particularly in outdoor areas, if the wall is flat.

If you are mounting your boxes inside, you may want to recess mount them, however. It saves space and looks a great deal more attractive. Recess mounted units have a frame-like border that surrounds them and sits flush with the wall.

You can count on vertical mailboxes to last. They are manufactured from 100 percent, heavy-gauged extruded aluminum. A powder coated finish keeps them from rusting and corroding. You can also have them painted in brass, bronze, sandstone, or even green colors.
