Choosing Apartment Mailboxes and Office Mailboxes for Building Mail Centers

Apartments and business office buildings may contain two very different kinds of commercial entities, but their function, and sometimes even structure, can be remarkably similar.  In terms of purpose, both are intended to lease space to others.  A building mail center is therefore necessary regardless of whether or not it services commercial clients or residential ones.

If you are looking to invest in apartment mailboxes or office mailboxes for your tenants, the following guidelines will help you navigate between all the choices you have to pick the very best units for your particular facility.

You can narrow down your choices by studying the wall on which you will mount them and answering the following questions:

  • How much vertical and space to you have for a group of mail box unit
  • Is it new construction or a remodel?
  • Is there a room or corridor behind the wall?

Once you answer these questions, it becomes very evident to you which apartment mailboxes or office mailboxes will best serve the needs of your building mail center.

Take, for instance, the amount of vertical and horizontal wall space you have.  If you happen to have a very long wall and a relatively small number of clients, then you can line up vertical apartment mailboxes or office mailboxes in a single row.  These units are very large, and they load like slots that fold outward on hinges in the front.  It is easy for mail carriers to access them and to put large pieces of mail in the box without having to bend it.  Some carriers also say it is easier for them to avoid making mistakes in delivery when loading vertical mail units.

If you have a larger number of tenants, however, and limited wall space, you can also buy front loading horizontal apartment mailboxes and office mailboxes for your building mail center.

You will next need to study the nature of the wall itself.  If it is a new construction, you can have the building mail center build recessed into the new wall.  However, if this is a remodel or an addition to a standing wall, you may need to invest in surface mounted units.

While many building mail centers feature rear loading horizontal apartment mailboxes or office mailboxes, these centers must have a room or corridor behind the wall for the mail carrier to use.  If your building does not have such a space, and if it is not cost effective to build one, then surface mounted, front loading units would be the natural default choice.
