Mail boxes that are made for apartments mount to the wall.  They can be surface mounted and front loading, or recessed mounted with rear loading capacity.  Rear loading units require a separate mail room for the carrier located behind the wall, which may not be present in all apartment buildings.  That being said, many of the mail carriers we know have told us that their favorite types of apt. mail box units are the vertical designs that forward load.  These secure locking community mailboxes are larger than horizontal units and allow larger pieces of mail to be inserted without having to be folded.  This saves carriers time and reduces the number of mistakes they make.
