What are the basic requirements for an ADA stall?

Actual dimensions vary based upon the type of stall you are building (see below) and the way the toilet is mounted.   For all designs, however, the doors must open with no more than 5 pounds of force.  Handles, pulls, locks, and latches need to feature custom shapes easy to manipulate with one hand and should not be more than 48 inches above the floor.  Grab bars must also be mounted in stalls and be able to handle at least 250 lbs. of force.

What types of facilities need to include ADA compartments in their commercial bathroom designs?

All new construction public restrooms and commercial restroom remodels must meet minimum ADA requirements.  It is important to note that these requirements often represent only a portion of what a facility may need to include in its commercial or public restroom.  There are other codes in addition to the American with Disabilities Act that apply to different states and municipalities.  XPB Locker is committed to assisting our clients either meet or exceed all applicable regulations in their area.  We include a free design drawing with every toilet partition quote that will itemize all special dimensions, adaptations, and accessories necessary to meet these requirements.

Is there more than one type of ADA stall?

Yes.  There are bathroom stalls designed for wheelchair access.  These are often referred to as wheelchair accessible stalls.  There are also walk-in stalls designed for persons on walkers, canes, or crutches.  These are known as ambulatory stalls or AMB stalls.

How many ADA compartments are required in a commercial bathroom design?

You need at least one wheelchair accessible stall.  In commercial restrooms that have six or more toilets, you will also need to include an ambulatory (AMB) stall.  However, local regulations may require more than the bare minimum Federal requirements.

Where in a public restroom design should ADA stalls be located?

There are two possible locations for a wheelchair stall.  One would be in an alcove configuration, where the handicapped stall is located on the end of a row of standard stalls and an optional ambulatory (AMB) stall.  The door of this stall would be at a right angle to the doors of other stalls.  The other would be an inline bathroom design, where the door to the handicapped and/or AMB stall would face toward the same direction as the door to the other, standard stalls.
