What is anti ligature design?

Anti ligature design involves building a restroom fixture or accessory with certain characteristics that minimize the risk of weapons manufacture or suicide. Fixtures must be built in a way that will prevent patients from tying cords (ligatures) to surface areas.  They must also be built with special edges and a minimum number of components that could be broken off and turned into weapons.

We see breakaway designs built into accessories like shower hooks and bathroom shelving. If patients try to tie a rope to one of these objects, they will snap out of the wall with only a few dozen pounds of force.  Other components to assemblies, such as shower heads, are designed with rounded surfaces that point down at too much of an angle.  Any rope tied to a shower head or valve has no traction to grip and slips off when weight is applied to the other end.

To minimize the possibility of weapons manufacture, restroom fixture manufacturers have to use either all welded assemblies or special bolts that cannot be removed with homemade tools. Any cylindrical object like a bolt can be filed into a point to make a weapon.  Security screws that are used in wall mounted panel showers are made so that anything a patient or inmate may get his or her hands on simply will not be able be successful as a homemade screw driver.

Anti ligature fixtures and accessories also typically feature fewer screws than non security fixtures to minimize the number of removable parts that could be targets for patient mischief. All welded cabinet showers, for example, are not screwed together, but rather feature an all welded assembly that makes the cabinet interior corners smooth, round, and contiguous throughout the assembly.

Because of the care used to build surfaces that cannot be sharpened to an edge or used to support a ligature cord, ligature resistant restroom fixtures also offer jails, prisons, and mental care facility the added value of exceptional vandal resistance. The materials used to make these accessories and fixtures are extremely hard to scratch, bend or break.  Additionally, toilets and sinks are designed with special basins and water controls that prevent inmates or patients from clogging up the drains to flood room or cell interiors.

Most anti ligature wall mounted panel showers and shower accessories feature beveled edges which prevent them from being pulled from the wall by patients or inmates.
