The two most popular types of handwash fountain activation are foot pedal control and infrared touch free control. There is no doubt that infrared activation, which activates only one sprayhead at a time, conserves more water than a foot control that activates all spray heads at once.  However, we must also realize that commercial hand wash fountains that are activated by foot controls are nonetheless still more efficient than an equivalent number of commercial lavatories.  The degree of water conservation, while noticeably different between foot activation and IR activation, may not really save some organizations as much money as a face value understanding of technology would suggest.

Due to the fact that the average public school and the typical industrial facility typically have only brief periods of high restroom traffic, it is not cost effective for either to invest in a unit that will cost at least $1,000.00 more on the front end and also add the additional cost of electrical wiring to the invoiced. IR units operate on hard-wired electrical circuits that have to be plumbed in addition to water connections.  This can really become expensive for circular units mounted in the very center of the restroom.
