How to Increase Privacy in Airport Restrooms With No Site Line Bathroom Partitions

In recent years, questions about privacy in airport restrooms have made their way into the news. Whether or not privacy is truly lacking in many airport facilities is not the point of this article.  Rather, we wish to address the very real perception that many people have that toilet stalls in these facilities do not provide patrons with sufficient privacy to feel comfortable.  In addition to the added stress that increased security measures have added to air travel, airports certainly do not need added negatives to their public image.  Improving the perception of privacy and comfort, regardless of the actual reality of either, has an inverse positive impact on public opinion and the possibilities for ongoing, repeat business.

However, airports may be hesitant to invest funds in what they may assume is going to be an extensive remodel of their existing facilities. This level of exorbitant spending is not necessary unless other considerations such as user access, code compliance, and water conservation become pressing.  In most renovations, however, increased comfort and privacy can be generated simply by replacing toilet partitions.  Existing fixtures and accessories can be left in place.  New partition materials and colors allows a near identical match to existing hardware to be installed without having to remodel the airport restroom in its entirety.

The solution is new pilaster and stall door design that closes the uncomfortable gap that typically measures up to one half inch between standard pilasters and doors. With doorjamb installed either on the interior edge of the pilaster (if the door swings outward), or on the exterior edge (if the door swings inward), a completely enclosed space can be created around the user.  No “site line” will be present between the door and the pilaster, and the door latch will indicated if the stall is in use or currently vacant.

Even more privacy can be created by customizing the sizes of the doors and partition panels to reach all the way to the floor. This is commonly done when customizing partitions for shower stalls, but it has gained increased popularity in commercial restroom stall design as well.  The space between the floor and the bottom of the panel can rise considerably above the ground.  Closing this space basically creates a room within a room where the user can experience a level of privacy equivalent to his or her restroom at home.  Airport restroom remodeling costs can be offset with new moisture and vandal resistant partition materials that add value to purchase through low-maintenance longevity and superior color schemes that compliment a wide range of interior decors.
