Do Wooden Benches Really Last?

Yes, wooden benches will last if they are properly constructed and treated. Keep in mind that wood itself is not the only material used in building these benches.  Several components are made from metal and will definitely withstand inclement weather conditions provided they are properly manufactured with durability in mind.

Many benches that we have are made with a cast aluminum frame that will not rust. This makes it ideal for indoor as well as outdoor use because it will not leave rust marks on the floor.  The frame is protected by an electrostatic powder coated finish.  The frame can also be colored white, green, black, or brown to compliment building architecture or surrounding landscape features.  Others are made with a cast iron which is also powder-coated to prevent rust out.

Wooden benches are made from wood which has been pre-finished prior to manufacture. They can be treated with either a preservative stain or a clear preservative coating that minimizes moisture penetration that can lead to wood deterioration.  Wood choices include pine, mahogany, cedar, oak, and Asian shorea wood—which is a sister wood to teak.  Keep in mind that wood that does not have to be treated if it is used inside.  However, benches used in atriums should be treated in order to protect the wood from interior humidity.

Benches can be ordered as portable or permanent mounting. Feet can be drilled for stationary mounting to sidewalk areas.  They can ordered with or without back rests.  Some feature very basic bench and back rests designs, while others have a deliberate, luxury appearance that looks sculpted, warm, and inviting.  Cedar benches are notably rustic and are ideal for historical renovation projects.

Wooden benches are popular for any type of garden area, commercial or residential. Office parks in particular like to use them in break areas that are designed to help people relax.  Backless benches are typically used for two reasons.  One, they are less expensive, and two, they encourage people to take shorter breaks because they do not invite persons to recline the way benches with backrests tend to do.  Benches with backs are more popular with restaurant and retail areas where encouraging people to stick around can lead to repeat business.
