Building Accessibility into Industrial Washroom Design

The Advocate Lavatory System - 1 StationBuilding accessibility into industrial washroom design often requires combining standard equipment with ADA compliant products.  Certain user stations can be fitted with fixtures and accessories that dual function as standard amenities with superior accessibility and ease of use.  It is not necessary to conceal the dual function of these fixtures, either, to make your commercial restroom meet the needs of users.  You simply want to avoid favoring one user group over the other, so that regardless of who uses the station, the experience is similarly comfortable, private, and accessible to both.

Start by taking a second look at your toilet stall layout.  If, after measuring areas for both standard and ADA stalls, you have already run out of space along most of your wall, you may want to have us redesign your floor plan.  Often, building accessibility into industrial washroom design requires moving an ambulatory stall or wheelchair access stall to another area rather than altering its dimensions.  This allows you to utilize more square footage without sacrificing the basics mandated by code.

This same principle can be applied to individual industrial shower stall design.  ManyA Quick Ship Solid Plastic Toilet Partitions factory, warehouse, and laboratory restrooms now offer showers and lockers to users who have to clean up after working around various contaminants.  Stalls can be built with larger partitions that create a completely private enclosure.  Building the stall large enough for wheelchair access, fitting it with grab bars, and including a shower seat ensures that disabled users can easily use the facility without able bodied users feeling even the least bit inconvenience.  ADA wall showers are in fact easier to use than standard models because they feature a mobile shower head attached to a flexible arm.  This can offer an added advantage to someone that has been exposed for several hours to contaminants and needs to thoroughly rinse off after the day is over.

Building accessibility into industrial washroom design is much easier when you consider building accessible hand wash stations with ADA compliant wall mounted lavatories that can also accommodate the able bodied as well.  The Frequency lavatory by Bradley Corporation is one of these fixtures that can accommodate all user groups within the full spectrum of accessibility needs.  With an upper and lower station characterized by the best knee clearance of any industrial sink, the Frequency 2 or 3 user station is the perfect way to turn a small wall space into a fully accessible, multi-user accommodation.

One technique that we do not recommend for building accessibility into industrial washrooms is the use of ADA compliant, central mounted wash fountains.  By nature, ADA wash fountains have shallower bowls which make it harder for a person to wash up past the elbows.  Without a deep bowl washing area, the user has to consume far more water, and sometimes at lower water pressures, to rinse off contaminants thoroughly.

Terrazzo® Corner-Fount Wash FountainsSince this is inefficient for everyone, it is better to use separate hand wash fountains for able bodied users and disabled users.  Corners units and wall units can be used for this purpose, depending on which works best with your floor plan.  Some facilities combine standard, central hand wash fountains and Frequency lavs when building accessibility into industrial wash fountain design.  Between the two stations, all user groups, including the handicapped, have a full range of accommodations suited to their needs and accessibility requirements.
