ADA compliant grab bars are installed in restrooms so people can hold and pull themselves up.  In most cases, these bars are installed in toilet stalls, bathtubs, and showers.

Theses grab bars are needed by elderly and disabled persons who require something hold on to something while standing.  Areas where this type of support may be needed include showers, hallways, and residential living quarters.

In order to meet code, each bar has to meet the highest level of Q/A established by the ADA and ABA accessibility guidelines for buildings and facilities.  Years of research has gone into determining the measurements and placements for grab bars.

For example, researchers found that the best height for horizontal bars is 33 to 36 inches.  Also, a diameter of 1 ¼ inches to 1 ½ inches is best for grip.  For safety, all bars have to support 250 pounds of weight.

When used in toilet stalls, grab bars must also have a specific number of requirements.  They must measure at least 42 inches in length.  They must also be located no more than 12 inches from the back wall.

Along the back wall, the bar must measure a minimum of 36 inches and must extend 12 inches from one side of the toilet.  It should be 24 inches from the opposite side.  Should the rear wall be too small to allow this, ADA regulations allow the bar measure only 24 inches so long as it is centered on the toilet.

ADA regulations also require ADA bars to accommodate different types of shower stalls.  In standard stalls, bars must extend across the control wall and go at least 18 inches from the corner of the control wall and the rear wall.

In a roll-in shower with a seat, a bar must extend along the rear wall and the side wall opposite the seat, and there can be no bar at all above the seat.A roll-in shower without a seat, grab bars have to be installed on three walls.  Every bar has to run along the length of the wall and extend no more than 6 inches way from the adjacent wall corner.

For alternate roll-in showers, the bars must be installed on the rear wall and side wall farthest from the entrance. They must not be above the seat, and they must be no further than 6 inches away from the corner of the adjacent wall.

In bathtubs with permanent seats, two ADA compliant grab bars must be installed on the back wall.  The lower bar has to be 8-10 inches above the bathtub rim.  The upper bar must be 33-36 inches above the finished floor.  A third bar must be on the control end of the wall too, and it must measure a minimum of 24 inches.
When there are no permanent seats, the minimum bar length should be 24 inches.  An extra 12 inch bar must be placed on the head wall.
