Shower Seats

Shower seats make it easy and safe for people of all age groups to shower and bathe.  They help people with physical limitations, and people who have physical disabilities, become more independent by sitting rather than standing.

Shower stall seating is every bit as comfortable as it is safe.  People who sit down on one of these chairs like it better than sitting in the bathtub itself.   It also feels good to take a shower sitting down

Most shower seats look like chairs.  These chairs either stand on the floor or they extend out from the wall.  Floor seats stand like any other kind of chair.  They are very convenient in this sense because you can put them in the shower and take them out when you are done.  However, they are not the safest option because they are not anchored to the floor.

If you use them, you have to be careful not to tip the seat over.

If you are limited in your mobility, disabled, or very elderly, you really should get ADA shower seats that are anchored.  These are wall-mounted units that extend out from the wall, much like shelves.  Some even fold upward to be flush with the wall.  This leaves more room in the shower for other people who are using the shower who prefer to stand, and who do not want the obtrusion of the seat.

Wall mounted shower seats that are built in the shape of shelves ha that are shaped like shelves with no legs also keep the floor area clear of trip hazards.  Wall-mounted units are many different designs.  Some also support braces that fasten them to the wall.  Other chairs are reinforced with two legs that support more weight.

In general, standard wall mounted units support up to two hundred and fifty pounds.  Additional legs will help a seat support up to five hundred pounds.

Shower stall seating equipment can be manufactured from granite, marble, ceramic tile, or stainless steel.  Stainless steel is the most corrosion resistant metal due to its ten percent chromium content.

ADA shower seats are also made from Type 304 stainless steel, which contains 8 percent nickel, and 18 percent chromium.

In some designs a seat is made with a stainless steel frame and a phenolic core.  Phenolic is highly moisture resistant because it consists of compressed cellulose fibers and resin.  When laminated and machined, it is attractive to the eye and comfortable to sit on.
