Over a ten year period, the Wood Leaf subdivision in San Antonio, TX had paid out $3,000.00 in repair costs for 4 wooden picnic tables that were suffering from sporadic vandalism and the effects of inclement weather.  Young people occasionally picked up the tables, which were very light, and threw them in the nearby swimming pool.  Wind and rain also wore down the wooden tops and seats, causing dangerous splinters to form and splitting the boards in places.

The new tables are very heavy, so vandals can no longer pick them up and toss them in the pool.

Questions were raised about the method of mounting the new tables.  Since two of the units were to be placed on concrete patios under gazebo coverings, it was decided to bolt these units directly to the concrete. 

The other four tables, being exposed to open air, could either be mounted in-ground with concrete leg extensions, or they could simply be placed on the ground with portable mounting supports.  Since the tables were for all intents and purposes too heavy to steal or throw into the pool, the Associated Management opted for portable mounts and the added security of chaining the bench legs to nearby shade trees. 

The response from Wood Leaf was overwhelmingly positive.  The new commercial picnic tables with benches are both more comfortable and attractive.  Residents have remarked that the entire area looks better now with the new forest green tables that provide a superb compliment to the lawn, pool, and neighboring tennis courts.
