In this blog, we will take a closer look at another set of requirements: building school restroom stalls that meet ADA accessibility requirements.

It is almost inconceivable that a school restroom could be built these days without providing special accommodation for disabled students. What this means in practical terms is very simple.  Even in the oldest of school buildings seeking only a basic and cost effective remodel, special accommodations are going to have to be built into the new layout to meet with compliance codes that are not only ADA mandated, but also, in many cases, mandated by states and local governments.

Several basic measurements are unique to these stalls.  Unlike the standard dimension of 48”, ADA compliant stalls must measure 60 inches from panel to panel. Grab bars for wheelchair access to and from the toilet must be mounted to the side panel, or the wall, nearest to the toilet.  The toilet itself must be offset on the back wall so that its centerline measures 18 inches from the closest wall or partition panel.   Stall depth is either 56 inches for wall mounted toilets or 59 inches for floor mounted toilets.

While these dimensions are basic, and very easy to remember, things can quickly become more complicated when there are more than just a few stalls. Codes require that school bathrooms with six or more toilets and/or urinals be designed with ambulatory stalls for wheelchair access.  In renovations or new constructions with varying wall treatments, slightly uneven floors, unusual floor constitutions, or unusual ceiling heights, space management concerns may cause unacceptable time delays in what should be a simple process of measuring restroom stall dimensions and ordering hardware to build the required assembly.
