Cleaning Instructions for Stainless Steel Toilet Partitions

Bradley Corporation fabricates its stainless steel toilet partitions from type 301 stainless steel, which contains 16-18 percent chromium and 6-8 percent nickel.  Type 301 stainless is highly resistant to and to a number of chemicals.

However, it is not indestructible.  While stainless steel toilet partitions are corrosion resistant, they are not immune to rust.    Anything metal rusts, just like everything living dies.  This is a fact.  However, just like you do not want to die anytime soon, stainless steel does not want to rust anytime soon. 

If you clean them every day with mild soap and water using a clean, soft cotton cloth, you have a much better chance of keeping them rust free and shiny.  However, certain environments will expose them to chemicals and salt in the air that will affect them.  Also, cleaning crews may use certain cleaning agents by mistake that can cause discoloration and rust.

Educate your staff starting now in what not to use on stainless steel toilet partitions.  This will save you money on after the fact repairs or possible costly replacements. 

Avoid any of the following at all times:

Never use any cleansers that contain bleach or chlorides

Never use muriatic acid, which is used to clean concrete

Never use water that has high iron content because the iron in the water will rust

Never leave soap on the partition because the soap may have chemicals that discolor the surface

Never use a cleaning pad made of metal, and avoid using cleaning agents stored in metal cans.

Never use any liquid that contains any kind of salt.

If you notice discoloration on your restroom partitions, remove it immediately.  You can use Revere Ware, Ajax, Bon Ami, or Goddard’s Stainless Steel Cleaner.  Use a nonmetallic pad like a Scotchbrite pad to apply the cleaner.  When you are done, rinse the panel thoroughly with water.   

If you find rust on your stainless steel toilet partitions, use the following cleaners based upon the type of finish you have.

Use naval jelly on bright and satin finishes.  It will tend to make the surface very shiny.  Be very careful because it is acid based, so apply it evenly all over the panel to make the sheen consistent.  Be sure to rinse all of it off. 

For a satin finish, use mild abrasives like BarKeepers Friend or Bone Ami and apply them with a soft wet cloth.  Rinse the partition thoroughly afterward and also dry it thoroughly. 

For grab bars that have a rough finish, use nonmetallic abrasive pads and a mild abrasive cleaner.  Scrub in the direction of the grain. 

Following these instructions will keep your stainless steel toilet partitions bright and rust free indefinitely.
